Jornadas ReSist 2025

Jornadas ReSist addressed coordination between architecture and engineering in the seismic assessment and strengthening of buildings.

We attended the training session “Da Arquitetura à Engenharia”, run by Lisbon Municipal Council through the Academia de Urbanismo Lx on 27 May 2025, as part of Jornadas ReSist. It was organised with the Ordem dos Arquitectos, the Ordem dos Engenheiros, the Ordem dos Engenheiros Técnicos and the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil.

When is a seismic vulnerability assessment report required?

Works of extension, alteration or reconstruction require a seismic vulnerability assessment report in four cases: (i) when the structure shows clear signs of deterioration; (ii) when the works change the structural behaviour; (iii) when the area affected exceeds 25% of the gross floor area; and (iv) when the cost exceeds that of an equivalent new building by 25%. For buildings in importance classes III or IV, the last two thresholds drop to 15%.

If the report concludes that the building does not meet 90% of the regulatory seismic action, a seismic strengthening design becomes mandatory.
